Dress Codes During Thanksgiving

Someone asked me the other day, “Is there a dress code for Thanksgiving?” That's a very good question. It really depends on the host, different meal set-ups calls for dress codes. I compiled a small list to help you.

• Buffet set-up – Here you can dress up in casual attire. Jeans, shorts, sweat pants, t-shirts or sweaters will do, anything that will be comfortable to wear is the key. Mostly everyone will be standing up and sitting down to get food.
• Sit down, passing the food set-up – The dress code here is smart casual. Shorts, sweat pants and ordinary t-shirts won't do. Jeans, long pants, and nice dress shirts is the bets way to go. Spills and mess will surely occur and many of us don't want a our Thanksgiving Dresses to get ruined.
• Sit down, plated dinner set-up – here, we take it up a notch, we go semi-formal. Usually here, the meal is either plated by the host or he or she has hired a professional to cook and serve the meal. Wearing long sleeved dress shirts, dress pants, Thanksgiving dresses or party dresses is the way to go.
• Sit down, five or more course meal set-up – consider this the highest form of dinner invite you can receive. Here, food is cooked and served by a professional caterer and the nice fancy stuff are served. The number of guests is more than twenty or so. The dress code for this occasion is strictly formal such as a nice suite for the guys and evening gowns for the girls.

Just always remember to ask your host what the dress attire will be. You don't want to celebrate Thanksgiving under dressed or over dressed.

A Thanksgiving Themed Wedding

A friend of mine went to a very unusual wedding last year; it was a Thanksgiving themed wedding. The story goes that the couple met at a Thanksgiving dinner (not really sure if it was the groom's family or the bride's) a few years ago. And from that time they always celebrated Thanksgiving together, either with his family or her family, and sometimes both. When they decided to get married, they were thinking of what the color theme would be. They both agreed on fall colors, but as planning became more and more detailed, they decided to have a theme wedding to commemorate the holiday they both met, Thanksgiving. What a romantic thing-- and I am one to swoon over romance.

My friend related to me how lovely the whole event was. They had to hold the wedding a week before Thanksgiving because mostly everyone was out on that Thanksgiving weekend. The bride wore a very nice wedding gown with lovely leaf designs on the train of the dress. The groom wore a very handsome tuxedo with brown, copper, yellow, orange accented cummerbund and bow tie. The bridesmaids, groomsmen, flower girls and ring bearers were in pilgrim costumes complete with the pilgrim hats. The wedding guests were encouraged to wear Thanksgiving dresses and suits or formal clothing in the colors of Thanksgiving. My friend said it was a very colorful sight; all the colors of the Thanksgiving were there.

The wedding menu consisted of traditional Thanksgiving foods with a twist. There was roasted turkey, which was cooked in stone ovens, which was served with mango-cranberry sauce, a side of wild rice stuffing and vegetable which was roasted inside the turkey. For dessert, they had a pumpkin-cinnamon frozen custard (by the way, the couple loves frozen custard) and a mix of fresh berries. I literally felt hungry as my friend was relating this to me.

Such a nice wedding on a very special holiday… Thanksgiving

Multicultural Thanksgiving Meals and Traditions

Thanksgiving was always special for me growing up. Coming from an Asian-American household, Thanksgiving was a wonderful addition to our holiday line up. I fondly remember the sights and sounds the season brings, the Thanksgiving dinners with family and friends, and the wonderful food that was prepared.

When it comes to traditions, there is really no set tradition aside from the Thanksgiving meal. But lately, watching The Macy's Thanksgiving Parade or a Football game has been a regular tradition for most families. Also, mostly everybody dresses in their best, fathers and mothers in their best Thanksgiving get up, girls in Thanksgiving dresses and boys in their handsome Thanksgiving ensemble. But you can do anything you want as a Thanksgiving tradition. Some of my friends play exciting and fun games with the family every Thanksgiving. I know some who made it a tradition that everyone helps out with cooking the Thanksgiving meal.

Being of an Asian-American household, sometimes we substitute the traditional Thanksgiving turkey with a roasted duck and other Chinese themed foods like dim sum and fried rice. It is funny how multicultural families here integrate their menu traditions with Thanksgiving. Here are some examples:

• My Filipino friends would have a suckling roasted pig, wide known in the Philippines as “litson” side by side with the traditional Thanksgiving turkey. They even serve a pork-blood stew called “dinuguan” which my friend says taste really good. I will have to take his word on that.

• In Hawaii, they have their own take of the traditional turkey, the Kalua Turkey, derived from the Kalua Pig. The turkey is seasoned with Hawaiian salt or sea salt and different traditional Hawaiian seasoning and roasted in a pit. This is usually served with a Hawaiian version of Cranberry sauced which is mixed with pineapple and mango juice. Hawaiians also serve rice as part of the Thanksgiving meal.

• Some Latin households will use traditional ingredients with their Thanksgiving meals like “chorizo” (Spanish sausage), paprika, cilantro and oregano with the turkey stuffing.

• A Japanese friend related to me how she integrated Japanese flavors in her Thanksgiving meal. She seasoned her turkey with light soy sauce, brown sugar and a pinch of wasabi powder. She also had some mash potatoes with a hint of wasabi. Yummy!

These are just a few examples of how many multicultural families integrates their cultural traditions with Thanksgiving, such a yummy and exciting way to enjoy the holidays.
