Cereal Box Tote Bag

Feeling crafty today? Why don’t you make something useful and something fun with your kids today? Before you throw anything away, think if you can use it for something else like a cereal box for a tote bag. Who would ever think its possible? But it is… here’s how:

What you'll need

  • 1 empty cereal box, any size
  • Scissors
  • Gift wrapping paper or newspaper
  • Paintbrush
  • Mod Podge matte sealer

How to make it:

  1. Cut off the box's top flaps.
  2. Measure where you want your handle to be, probably about an inch from the open end. Draw a 4x1 inch oval centered on the front and back of the box then cut out the ovals to create the handles.
  3. Measure the box and cut out your paper according to the measurement. Or you can also just tear your paper into various shapes.
  4. Apply a small amount of Mod Podge using the paintbrush to the whole box then smooth the paper onto the box. Fold the papers over the edges of the box where necessary. Spread more Mod Podge over the paper to help seal it in place. Let it dry for about 20 minutes.
  5. To close the tote easily, fold a line down the middle of each side of the box, then bring the edges together to crease the fold.
Done! And now you have a new tote bag to carry along while you shop. You can even use this as a gift bag to give to others!

Stay tuned for more crafty bits only here in our blog! Don’t forget to shop at Elitedresses.com, if you’re looking for a great dress for your little princess.

Saving up for Prom

Nowadays, people are more likely to spend a lot on Prom dresses. I read an article about it on nbcnews.com and it came as a shock to me that some people are willing to spend an average of $500 for prom, starting from the dress.

A Prom dress usually starts from $100 and up. More people now are buying from an online store since they want to be unique and matchless. An average of $1,139 per family has been in preparation for prom. Wow. And just to think it’s just a day of an event. The good thing is you can sell the dress afterward.

It amazes me that teens are willing to save up some money to spend on their prom. Visa, which is a credit card company, surveyed and found that parents plan to spend 59% of the total cost of prom and the rest is paid by the teens themselves. This is a good way of teaching the kids about budgeting and saving money since apparently prom is very important to them.

Start your kids early and teach them to save on a dress they like to purchase online. Look at our vast collection of little girls dresses perfect for any occasion. Ask them to choose a dress they like and tell them you’ll pay 60% while they save and pay the remaining 40%.

How much did you spend on prom this year? Share and comment below!

Home-made Play-dough Recipe

Want to do something different with the kids?

Try this Homemade play-dough recipe. Why? Because it is cheap, non-toxic and lasts a long time! Save money by doing this at home than buying the expensive brands you see at the toy store. This is very easy to make with ingredients you can see on your kitchen.

What do you need:
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/3 cup salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • food coloring
Instructions:

Mix together all the dry ingredients first, then the wet ingredients afterwards, (except the food coloring) in a saucepan or a large pot. Stir until no lumps remain.  Cook over low/medium heat, stirring for 3-4 minutes or until a dough forms (kind of like when you cook a mashed potato). Once it begins to thicken, add the food coloring. Continue stirring until the mixture is much thicker and begins to gather around the spoon. Remove the dough onto wax paper or a plate to cool. Add flour if too sticky or a few drops of water if too dry. Knead until uniform in color. Store in airtight containers.

If you've got a different recipe for homemade play-dough, please share in the comments.

Happy Earth Day!

Today, we celebrate Mother Earth’s Day!

This is the time to give back to Mother Earth. Time to reduce, reuse and recycle. Time to plant trees, clean the environment, go on a hike, ride a bike, have a picnic, eat veggies and fresh fruits, water the plants, go on a boat ride, basically just enjoy the presence of Mother Nature.

I hope everyone is enjoying and contributing to earth day, and don’t forget to have fun with your kids. Look back on our past posts below to see the activities you can do on earth day with your kids!

Always remember that YOU can make a difference!

How Old Are Your Flower Girls?

A lot of parents or Groom and Bride-to-be are asking how old are flower girls?

Flower girls are generally between four and eight years old. Some "mature" two- and three-year-olds pull it off quite adorably, perhaps with parents or bridesmaids escorting them down the aisle.

If the girl is a bit older, she might be considered as a junior bridesmaid -- junior bridesmaids wear dresses similar (or the same) in color and style as the bridesmaids dress.

If you’re looking for adorable and affordable dress for your flower girls, check our site Elitedresses.com, which caters lots of well-designed flower girl dresses with a lot of variety when it comes to style, colors and sizes.

Do you have this in stock?

A lot of our customers have had bad experiences with other dress manufacturers. A common problem is they order a dress, the competitor can't get it, and they don't notify the customer. The customer finally finds out, the even is just around the corner, and then we get to take care of the customer.

Are you a Flower Girl Parent?

Being a flower girl parent can be one of the most important roles before, during, and after the wedding ceremony. I’ve witnessed and watched some of the hilarious things kids do at weddings—from crying out loud, running on the aisle and even sleeping on the aisle! I’ve gathered up a few tips to have a happy daughter and a happy you. Read on to know how to lessen the stress of being a flower girl parent.

1.)    First, have a talk with your daughter and explain to her the details of being a flower girl. It’s important that she knows what’s expected of her throughout the ceremony.

2.)    Practice makes perfect. DO attend the rehearsal dinner with the bride and groom so that your child will know what to do and when to enter the aisle. DO a dress rehearsal with your daughter, if there’s none. When the special dress arrives, have your daughter practice walking in it. Have them practice sprinkling flowers on a mock aisle at home. Practice taking pictures of your daughter so she’ll have a feel of how it is in front of a camera and so she can practice her best smile and poses.  The more they practice, the more comfortable they’ll be when the big day arrives.

3.)    On the big day, prepare mess-free snacks and mess-free activities for your kid. With a lot of waiting around before and during the wedding, your child will probably get bored and might cause tantrums and meltdowns. Make sure you have entertainment like games on phones or iPads, books, coloring books, etc. Bring water in a spill-proof sippy cup and non-messy healthy snacks (less sugar to avoid sugar rush).

Finally, sit back, relax and hope for the best. If your child is causing trouble, just excuse yourself and go outside with your kid, she might just want a little fresh air.

Return Shipping - Should We?

Best Value with a great customer experience, or the cheapest price?

Our goal with EliteDresses is to offer the best value to our customers. If a customer wants a cheap dress with lousy quality, and don't even get me going on late dresses and bad customer communication, they should buy else where. Our goal is to offer the best value for our customers. The question is should offering a return shipping label or not.

I have very mixed feelings on offering a return label for shipping. The headache is shipping is not free. If a customer got free shipping for their order assume our cost is $10, and then it would be another $10 for a return shipping label, plus the labor, and credit card fees. The end result is we just lost $25 on that order. The current return policy is we will refund the initial shipping, if another order is placed to be fair. Many competitors don't even have an 800 Telephone Number!

For other sites that offer free returns, they are really not free. What I see from the competitors is:
  • Higher prices of at least $10 per dress.
  • Add a return fee - 15% seems to be standard.
  • Add a bunch of mickey mouse restrictions.
  • Super short return period - we do 30 days.
If the return is our fault such as a quality issue or we gave you the wrong sizing information if you gave us the measurements, we will supply a return label. We work very hard on our quality process to make sure that you get the perfect dress.

Recycled Bottle Bowling Fun for the Family

This Earth month, Recycling is one of the best activities to do with your kids. Using recycled materials saves money and saves the planet too! You can make amazing crafts with things that people normally throw out like plastic bottles.

With just a little time and some supplies, you’ll be able to make a fun bowling game for your whole family using recycled plastic bottles.

What you need: 10 used plastic bottles, paint (you can use one just one color or 10 different colors) and glue.

How to do it:
1.) Remove cap from bottles and clean thoroughly.

2.) Squeeze a small amount of paint in the bottom of each water bottle. 1 oz will do. If your paint is thick you might want to add a bit of water but not too much or the paint won’t be able to cover the bottle properly.
3.) Put the caps back on all your bottles and (let your kids) shake each bottle briskly to spread the paint all over the bottle.
4.) Remove cap and pour out any excess paint. Keep the cap off and allow your paint bottles to dry. When dry, put a little bit of glue on the lid and put it back on top so that your kids won’t be able to open the bottles.
5.) Set up your recycled bowling pins, grab a ball and have fun!

If you have more fun recycling ideas for the whole family, don’t hesitate to share and comment below!

Great Deal for a Vintage Wedding Theme

Are you planning your wedding? or do you know someone who is?

With so many different wedding themes available to today's couples, it's sometimes difficult to decide on the perfect one. Simplify your choices and give your big day some old-fashioned flair by choosing a traditional wedding theme. A traditional wedding offers sophistication and romance that will charm any bride and groom with ceremonies and traditions steeped in history.

There are many reasons to go vintage on your wedding dress -- a unique look and a classically sophisticated style, to name a few -- but finding the perfect vintage gown is not always as easy as rummaging through your grandmother’s attic and finding a perfect hand-me-down. Sometimes, we have to find inspiration and plan our wedding dress.

When planning your vintage wedding wardrobe, you'll want to first choose a decade that relates to your individual style. Take a look back at the most popular wedding-related history and more than 40 vintage dresses from 1850 to 1950 at this Groupon deal for two or four.

Plant a Tree with Your Kids

This earth month, teach your children about the many principles of trees and how they benefit our environment. You can also teach your kids on the types of trees that are found in your area. This is also a great time for a family hike and picnic! Surround yourself in nature.

Tree planting is the most popular Earth Day event and one of the most common activities people do in helping the Earth. The simple act of planting a tree helps the environment in so many ways.

Teach your kids on why we should plant trees. Tell them that trees create shade, gives shelter from wind and rain, provide homes for animals, make food for humans and animals, help recycle water, etc.

Making your children aware of the benefits of trees will give them extra pride in their own planting. This gives them a sense on how they can protect and preserve the environment through caring for existing trees and planting new ones.

So grab a seed and plant with your kid!
