First Communion, also
known as Holy Communion or reception of the Holy Eucharist, is a sacrament and
one of the most important practices in the Roman Catholic Church. Holy
Communion, together with the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, lay the
foundations of every Christian life, this according to the Catechisms of the
Catholic Church.
For Catholic
families, the importance of this sacrament is great because it is a sacrament
of initiation and draws the children into the Catholic Church. As a preparation for First Communion, the
family of the Communicant, together with the Catholic Church, prepares the
child through religious education at a local Parish. Religious education, also
known as catechism, teaches children about the Mass and beliefs of the Catholic
Church.

This is also a
festive time for families of the First Communicant; this usually includes large
family gatherings and parties to celebrate the event. Special clothing is
usually worn. The clothing is often white or ivory to symbolize purity. Girls often wear
fancy first Communion dresses with a veil attached to a crown or tiara, as well
as long or short white gloves. Sometimes, girls commonly wear first communion dresses passed down to them from sisters, mothers or other relatives.
