Cotillion is a well known tradition in different parts of the world. It is a formal occasion where in young ladies are introduced to the society. It is celebrated in many ways, in the Philippines Cotillion refers to the dance where the Debutante (age 18) and her escort dances with another 18 pairs to celebrate the coming of age by the debutante. Then there are 18 roses and 18 candles where friends and relatives give the debutante a wish or a gift. The debutante wears a gown and her escort a suit.
In Australia, the debutante ball is usually organized by a school, a club such as Lions and Rotary or the church. It is usually a fund raising event where the family of the debutante (usually aged 16 to 18) donates the money to a charity of their choice and the guests pay for their tickets.
In America, cotillion is pretty big specially in the Southern part where the celebration starts with sessions on how to act properly and lady like. It's sometimes an elaborate celebration because it entails tuition fees, after activities and then it culminates to a Holly Ball where the ladies wear their best white gown and gloves and the guys wear their finest suit.The ladies are called Belles of the ball and are introduced to the polite society. It is a night of dancing and socialization. For most it is the social event of the year.
Cotillion also includes junior flower girls and pages depending on how elaborate the event is. Parents are also given the chance to dance with their daughter and wear their best dresses as well. For little girls and junior girls, they are also expected to wear gowns. They don't need to be as elaborate as the debutante's but it should be equally stunning.
