A Summer Project with the Kids: Homemade Playing Dough

Want a great summer activity or project to do with your kids? Why not make some homemade playing dough. It's fun to make and your children will have a great time making stuff with this. Here's the recipe:

Playing Dough Recipe

Ingredients:
1 cup white flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tablespoon cream of tartar (you can find this in the spice section)
1 tablespoon oil (better to use vegetable oil, your children might put it in their mouth)
1 cup water
food coloring

Procedure:

Sift into a pan the first 3 dry ingredients well, this will help a lot when mixing. Mix in the oil and water and mix well. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly for 3 - 5 minutes. Dough will form a clump and become difficult to stir. Remove from stove and let cool for a bit, then knead for 5 minutes while adding the food coloring. Playing dough will keep for long periods of time stored in a covered plastic containers or plastic sandwich bag. If it starts to dry out, add a drop of vegetable oil and water and knead it again.

Take note, you can also use unsweetened fruit juice for coloring. With this, you will get a fruity scent.

Also, a great tip for the winter holidays - add some cinnamon to the dry ingredients (as much as you want) or maybe a drop of edible peppermint oil, just to get that perfect holiday scent.

Now that you are done, just sit back and watch your children's imagination run wild!
