DIY Drums Set 

For kids, New Year celebration is all about fun and making noise.  It does not have to involve firecrackers... just a simple, cute and crafty custom-made instrument is all it takes for you and your kids to celebrate New Year with a blast!

Materials 

 

• Empty Milk can
• Balloons
• Scissors
• Packaging tape
• Sticks
• Old cloth
• Crepe Paper

How to Make your DIY Drums Set

  

1. Cut the balloon and stretch it around the can.

2. Put packaging tape around the corner of the balloon to hold it firmly into the can.   

 

3. Double the layer to make the drum durable, and to make a fun effect.  You may cut holes and shapes on the top layer to serve as design.

 

4. Hold the second layer firmly by using scotch tape or clear packaging tape.

 

5. Cut a piece of crepe paper or a cloth to seve as the outer layer of the drum.  Wrap it around the can.

6. Put embellishment to design the drum.

 

Now, your daughter has a cute custom-made drum that she can use to make noise during Christmas celebration and in welcoming the New Year.

3 Busted Myths About Kwanzaa

Do you or someone you know celebrate Kwanzaa? The celebration starts today and goes on through the 1st of January. Kwanzaa is not as popular or well-known as other winter holidays which has brought about little knowledge and some myths on what this holiday actually entails. Here are 3 of the biggest myths and truths associated with Kwanzaa.

Myth #1: It was based in Africa
The clothing, music, food and colors of Kwanzaa are all related to certain African customs and even the holiday name "Kwanzaa" is Swahili. However, Kwanzaa was not based in Africa. This holiday began in 1966 and was started in the United States by Maulana Karenga, an African-American who is currently the chairperson for Africana Studies at California State University Long Beach. 

Myth #2: It's affiliated with religion
Kwanzaa is a celebration based on harvest time in Africa. Customs include placing crops, "mazao" in Swahili, and the unity cup, "kikombe cha umoja", on top of a straw mat which is set on the same table as the seven candles. There is no religious affiliation with the holiday and some Christians actually celebrate both Christmas and Kwanzaa.

Myth #3: It is discriminating
Because this holiday was started during the Black Power Movement, some have claimed the holiday as racist or discriminatory of other races. However, this holiday was founded on upholding certain African traditions within the African-American community. The focus is not to outcast other races, but to remember the heritage and customs associated with being African that may have been lost or forgotten otherwise.

A Mother's Crafty Idea

DIY Caroler's Santa Hat

Christmas presentations are not yet over. In fact, they may just be starting in some places. Just to suggest an idea for Caroler costume accessories, you may use this very simple and easy to make Santa Hat that is perfect for Carolers costume accessories for group events and Christmas presentations as well.

Materials

 

• Large red construction paper
• Black, yellow, and pink construction paper
• Scotch Tape
• Glue
• Cotton balls
• Scissors

Instructions: 

1. Twirl the 20 inches-wide red construction paper into a cone-shaped hat.
2. Tape along the seams from the inside of the cone.
3. Trim the pointed sides of the cone. 
4. To create Santa's face, Cut a small circle of pink paper and glue it to the center of the cone.
5. Cut out 2 tiny black paper circles that serves as Santa's eyes. Glue the eyes in to Santa's face.
6. Cut out a quarter-moon shape from the red construction paper to serve as Santa's mouth. Glue just below Santa's eyes.
7. For Santa's belt, cut 1-inch tall trip from black construction paper and glue around the cone, just below Santa's face.
8. Cut a small yellow rectangle for a belt buckle. Glue it to the center of the belt.
9. Glue a cotton ball at the top of the cone. (Optional: Sometimes, it is hard to lock the cotton ball into the tip of the cone. The trick is to use cotton bud, insert the stick inside the tip of the cone, and glue cotton balls into the cotton bud.)
10. Glue cotton balls around the face for Santa's beard.
