What is interesting is both dresses were the same size theoretically, but per the size chart the the only difference is the length.

Tips for getting a Girls Dress that Fits

How to Get A Girls Dress That fits

Girls Dresses vary depending on the style. A size 12 in one style, may be a size 10 in another. Just like Women's sizes vary, so do girls sizes. Unfortunately, there is no standard for dress sizes in the US, for girls or for Women.

What we have done, is create different size charts for each dress. Yes, that was a lot of measuring, since most of our suppliers don't give size charts.

I have the measurements, but I still Need help!

Send us the measurements along with the product code of the dress you like, and we will actually measure the actual dress to be shipped. Dresses are not 100% exactly the same even if the same style and size, they vary a little bit.

Tips for Getting The Right Size:

  1. The most important measurement for dresses, is around the chest. Nobody wants to have to do, what Carrie Fisher did to play Princess Leia.
  2. Note the size your daughter usually wears. Ordering a size 2, when your daughter usually wears a size 6 will not end well.
  3. Leave room for under garments.
  4. It's always better to go larger, than smaller in sizing. Most of the dresses I sell, have a bow in the back, that gives some adjustment.
  5. Give room for growth. Growth spurts do happen.
  6. If you can't get actual measurements, use a dress that fits your little one and measure that.
  7. If a dress is listed on elitedresses as a 3/4 for example, it's a size 4. It's the size the manufacturer puts on the label.

Tips for Getting the perfect fit for Girls Dresses:

Sizing is a huge headache! This article has some good advice:

How to Shop for Clothes Online and Get a Perfect Fit - Life Hacker

Tips for getting the perfect fit for Girls Dresses:
  1. Get good measurements. My page on how to measure your child
  2. Check the size chart for the dress you want, each style is a little bit different - I have over 200 size charts
  3. If you have questions, please call, e-Mail, chat, etc.! If you give us the measurements, we are very happy to measure the actual dress. If you send us the measurements, your covered by our size guarantee, where for US customers we will pay the return shipping on exchanges.
  4. Do not go for exact fits! if a shirt is going to be worn under the dress, leave room for it. And dresses vary a little bit.
  5. Remember, kids grow!

The wife's dress size? Half of men don't have a clue

Size is one of those things that is a bit private. Especially as you get older, and for some of us, find out somehow manufacturers have made the sizes smaller :-)

The wife's dress size? Half of men don't have a clue despite buying the lady in their life an item of clothing - Daily Mail

What I have seen is that sizes vary in the US, from style to style, and from manufacturer to manufacturer. So one store's size 6 dress, may be a size 8 or even 10 at another store. It's frustrating! Size charts are one of the big challenges of selling girl's dresses.

What I created was a conversion size chart to help foreign customers:

European vs. US Girl's Size Charts

I have not seen a conversion between US and European sizes for girls.

I just had a customer from Europe contacting me asking what size I would recommend for ages 6 and 10.

Aargh!  So I just did a bit of searching (Googling) and came up with nothing.

It seems there is a rough relationship between size and age for US sizes.  The challenge is kids vary so much in their shape, at the same age.

Future project - build a conversion chart between European and US Sizes.

And of course, US Sizes for Girls, just like for Women, can and do vary a bit.  For example at some stores my wife would wear a size (left blank so I don't get in trouble), and at other stores the next size up (again left blank so I don't get in trouble).  Which is just frustrating.

It would be nice if a size X at Nordstrom's, was the same as a size X at JC Penney's for example.  The X has no meaning as a size, and represents any number.

Sizing Crazyness

This is so true!

In one store, you’re a Size 4, in another a Size 8, and in another a Size 10 — all without gaining an ounce.

Have I mentioned Size Charts are a headache!  And I don't trust them, unless I actually did the measurements.

A simple question - When a dress has a high waist, where do you measure the waist?

Where the skirt meets the upper part of the dress?  Or where the actual waist would be?

My vote is for where the actual waist would be.

And different styles fit differently even from the same brand!  And if different brands, there can be a definite difference in size!

Sizing Headaches

The problems I see that cause returns, exchanges are:

1. The child is in between sizes.  They wear a size 7, but I sell dresses in size 6 or 8.  I recommend a size 8, but sometimes a size 6 is needed.

2. The child is extra tall.  Size charts do not show fit and it depends on the style with where arm holes are, how long the dress is, and also where the waist is.

3. The child is a bit wide.  Again, it depends on the style for what will look good.

English to US Size Chart

I have found lots of conversion charts for shoe sizes, but not much for kids clothes:

One I did find:

Its seems the US and UK sizes are the same for kids.
