What to do on Mother's day?

Mother’s day is so near and many people are still asking “What to do on Mother’s day?”.

This is one day we can give back to our moms for all the things she did for us and make her feel oh so special. So what could we do on Mother’s day? Here are a few ideas:

1.)    Buy her a bouquet of her favorite flowers the day before mother’s day and surprise it to her in the morning when she wakes up along with a very healthy breakfast in bed.
2.)    Treat your mom in a “Spa day” where she can relax and get that massage she’s been craving and needing for weeks.
3.)    Go on a “Shopping spree”. What better way to spend time with your mom that spending and shopping.
4.)    The day isn’t complete without dessert. Go on a chocolate or gelato shop and treat your mom on a yummy dessert to satisfy her sweet tooth.
5.)    Create a photo album of memories. Your mom will surely love reminiscing the great memories she had with you.
6.)    Plan a weekend getaway for her. Find out where she would most likely love to go and plan everything that she won’t have to do anything but relax when she gets there.
7.)    Take her out for a private dinner or make dinner for her. Cook up one of her favorite meals and set the table and let her relax and enjoy her meal while you serve her.

Whatever you do, just make this day special for your mom. Make her feel relaxed and loved.

What are your plans on Mother’s day? If you have more interesting ideas, do share it below!

DIY Decorative Candles Perfect for Mother's Day

Mother’s Day is only days away so I have here a tutorial for making an ordinary, plain candle and turning it into something beautiful to give to your mother or it can be an activity you can do with your kids on Mother’s day.

What you need: New/used Candle(Preferably white, cream, tan or beige), Glue stick, tissue paper (facial), hair dryer, printer and design materials(optional)

How to do it:
1.) First you have to find the image you want to put on the candle. It can be a picture of you, your mother, your kids, grand kids, or the whole family.

This is the Image that I used.
2.) Insert the image to Microsoft Word. Make sure it’s on landscape mode.  Adjust the image on the center of the page and make sure it’s the same size as your candle.

3.) Attach a piece of tissue paper (1 ply) to a piece of paper by putting glue around the edges.  This will keep the tissue paper in place as it goes through the printer. Load the tissue paper into the printer and print the image onto it.

You can see how the image is just at the middle of the tissue paper.
4.) Cut the tissue paper along the side where the glue is. Make sure that it’s the same width (or a little smaller) than the height of your candle.

5.) Wrap the tissue strip around your candle to make sure it fits.  Put a line of glue directly on the candle where the end of the tissue meets to hold the tissue in place.

6.) Blow the heat using the hair dryer at the candle moving slowly over the tissue paper. Don’t stay in one place too long or the wax will start to pool. As the wax begins to melt, it will seep through the tissue paper. Shortly your whole candle will be smooth wax with the tissue paper image underneath. Look at the image below.
The wax is seeping through the tissue paper.
7.) Design your candle with embellishments like buttons, beads, ribbons, etc. I have some beads and gemstones lying around so I used that to design my candle.
End Result!
You can wrap your candle with a clear plastic and add some raffia or ribbon to the top as your finishing touch.

Advance Happy Mother’s Day!

Few Facts About Mother's Day

Even before Mother's day celebration was popularized, it was campaigned by Ann Jarvis but she died before Mother's day celebration was accepted. Few years later following her death, her daughter Anna Marie Jarvis continued her mother's advocacy to promote Mother's day as an annual holiday that celebrates motherhood and maternal bonds in recognition of all the mothers. She delivered 500 white carnation to local mothers and it was said that was the starting point of the celebration. Later, people has been accustomed to give mothers a white carnation during Mother's day which was officially celebrated as a holiday every 2nd Sunday of May. Due to the shortage of white carnation flowers, people were encouraged to wear white carnation if their mothers are still alive and wear red if their mother has passed away.

Why carnation you ask? It's Ann Jarvis' favorite flowers and in honor of her, her daughter chose them to give to the mothers. Some would say that Mother's Day was highly commercialized but personally I see nothing wrong about it since it has a noble intention. Mother's day is celebrated to thank all mothers for the love and sacrifices they have given to the family. It is there to give honor to all mothers and their contribution to society.

This 2011, mother's day is celebrated on May 08, 2011. Are you ready for a nice celebration for Mom? Get your kids to wear only the prettiest girls' dresses on that day. No need to buy expensive ones, we got you covered on that one. Check out next week's sale them: MOTHER'S DAY SALE! :)

For now, celebrate and be merry because it's EASTER!

Mother's Day lingers...

The spirit of Mother's Day celebration still hungs in the air so I would like to talk about a mother and a daughter's bonding. Does this exist even before the child was born? How about adoptive mothers, how does the bonding between her and the child happen? These are just a few of the questions I have in mind. If you have your own opinion please enlighten me as I am also a first time Mom and would gladly accept any insight.

I am speaking solely from my own experience and based on some of my readings as well. When I was still pregnant, I often talked to my baby about the things I do all day, my experiences, my thoughts, and my feelings. Later my baby learned to communicate with me and the people around us by moving inside my womb. In fact, she helped us decide on which name she likes the best.
When she finally came out, I was deeply attached to her to a point that when she's out of my sight for an hour or so, I get depressed-- I know, post partum depression (PPD) is normal and usually lasts 2 weeks but honestly I don't think I had major PPD because my daughter and husband helped me through it.

Now that my daughter's more than a year old, I easily understand her gestures and most of the time, I "feel" her needs even before she can tell me. Isn't that amazing?
Of course, it helped that I'm a hands-on Mom and I see to it that I'm there whenever she needs me. In the same way that she's close to me, my daughter is also close to her Dad. They have a different bond. I guess because she often sees her Dad leave for work and gets excited when she hears him on our front door.

As I've walked through different blogs, I realized that being a mother isn't all about being pregnant, labor and finally delivery of a child. A mother is also someone who saved a child from violence and rejection. A mother is someone who stands by someone else's child and yet willing to move mountains to protect that child. A mother is someone who calls a child her own even their skin color differs.

Different strokes for different folks.

Poem for a Mother

My Miracle Mother
Mom, I look at you
and see a walking miracle.
Your unfailing love without limit,
your ability to soothe my every hurt,
the way you are on duty, unselfishly,
every hour, every day,
makes me so grateful
that I am yours, and you are mine.
With open arms and open heart,
with enduring patience and inner strength,
you gave so much for me,
sometimes at your expense.
You are my teacher,
my comforter, my encourager,
appreciating all, forgiving all.
Sometimes I took you for granted, Mom,
but I don’t now, and I never will again.
I know that everything I am today
relates to you and your loving care.
I gaze in wonder
as I watch you being you—
my miracle, my mother.
